A guidebook that teaches graphic design students forms of socially responsible design and design citizenship. The book focuses on how the current prioritization for commerce within the design industry is exacerbating the environmental crisis and obscuring non-materialistic ways to happiness. The book demonstrates and teaches design thinking, circular processes, co-design, power of communication, design activism and design for sustainability, to name a few.

GOOD THINGS FIRST
The Graphic Design education system is primarily oriented around commerce, and therefore designers tend to prioritise profit-driven design as its what they have been taught to prioritise. In a seemingly compliant profession, Graphic Designers are outwardly obliged to serve consumption within a capitalist system; generating desire that aims to manipulate the consumer’s purchasing behaviours. What emerges is that social, ethical and environmental design considerations are being overlooked through a firm focus on consumption.

This book is aimed at design students who will shape the future of the design industry, and aims to teach forms of socially responsible design and design citizenship. It is a well known fact that young people are more willing and open to implement sustainability and socially responsible practices, both within the graphic design industry and outside.  Therefore, a student audience is most likely to want to learn these design practices, tips and tricks.
