Modern Aksara - Bogor City Landmark Identity

Now a day just a few Sundanese people that know, understand, and even use it in everyday live. In educational system in West Java, Aksara Sunda become a part of Muatan Lokal (Local Identity) and student have to know about it, but the application in real life just for the sake of know, no more than that. So because of that I start to think about "How can I make it more modern and attract young people to know more about Aksara Sunda. I recreate the Aksara with more futuristic and modern look and feel, by creating a new typography. I create this poster design by using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. The first thing I do is recreating the font (Aksara) based on the traditional writing and transfor it to more modern look. after that I create another design element that represent the landmark of Bogor city by using warp tool in Photoshop. I warp the iridescent texture and make it match with the landmark map. After that I create and compos all that element in Adobe Photoshop.

Aksara Sunda

Is a writing system which is used by the Sundanese people. It is built based on Old Sundanese script (Aksara Sunda Kuno) which was used by the ancient Sundanese between the 14th and 18th centuries.

Since Sundanese people have utilized many different scripts, there were several requirements considered in the standardization of the Sundanese script for modern usage: (a) a script that can record Sundanese language; (b) period of usage; (c) area of usage; (d) simplicity; (e) shows Sundanese identity.

The government of West Java Province has announced Peraturan Daerah (Local Regulation) no. 6 1996 about the Sundanese language, literature and script. The regulation was motivated by Keputusan Presiden (President's Decision) no. 082/B/1991, 24 July 1991.

Modernize the Ancient Text

The young people start to forgot about it because it was simply Old fashioned and to strict. So because of that I start to think about "How can I make it more modern and attract young people to know more about Aksara Sunda, so I recreate the Aksara with more futuristic and modern look and feel, by creating a new typography based on traditional manuscript.

Beside the font and the text I also recreate a modern element based on the location of our city landmark, based on the map and area of that landmark by using iridescent element. By transforming the iridescent texture I can give a modern touch to the design that I want to made.
